History

Gandhiji Maha Vidyalai

Gandhiji Maha Vidyalai was founded in 1983 in Shevapet, Salem, by five dedicated Hindi activists: Mr. K.R. Gopalan, Mr. C.S. Kamaraj, Mr. S. Gunasekaran, Mr. R. Jayakaran, and Mr. N. Sampath. Initially, many of whom later became accomplished Hindi teachers. While Hindi education remains central to GMV, over time, the institution expanded its offerings to include Tamil, English, Sanskrit, Telugu, and Malayalam language courses.

Shortly after GMV’s founding, the institution established GMV Nursery and Primary School on its premises, which eventually grew into GMV Matriculation School, guiding students toward their 10th-grade public examinations. This development allowed GMV to offer students a comprehensive education from early childhood through secondary school.

History

For over 25 years, GMV provided free Hindi seminar classes every six months, preparing students for the Dakshina Bharat Hindi Prachar Sabha Exams. The institution also published a monthly magazine, GMV News, which shared valuable updates and guidance with students and teachers.

As the years passed, GMV saw changes in leadership. Mr. R. Jayakaran and Mr. N. Sampath transitioned away, leaving Mr. K.R. Gopalan, Mr. C.S. Kamaraj and Mr. S. Gunasekaran at the helm. Following Mr. S. Gunasekaran’s passing in 1996, the management of GMV was left to Mr. K.R. Gopalan and Mr. C.S. Kamaraj. In 2000, these leaders opened the GK Book Shop, specializing in Hindi and Sanskrit books, guides, dictionaries, and GMV’s own publications, such as Q&A books and model question papers for Hindi exams.

In 2019, Mr. C.S. Kamaraj passed away, marking a profound loss for the GMV family. His son, Mr. C.K. Ashik Kumar, joined Mr. K.R. Gopalan in managing the business. Through Ashik Kumar’s efforts, GMV and GK Book Shop have made significant progress, expanding their reach and continuing to benefit the Hindi-learning community.
